Johnathan Johnson is a Visual Journalist and Documentary Filmmaker in Dallas, TX.

He grew up in the small town of Cleburne, Texas. There, his desire to know the world beyond his driveway grew. Picking up the camera in 2017 and taking darkroom courses at Tarrant County College, under the guidance of Patricia Richards and Ting Huang, John developed his documentary photography style.

In 2021 he was part of one of the first annual cohorts of Film apprentice’s through the Pegasus Media Project created by Christian Vasquez and Niloo Jalilvand. The yearlong film making intensive taught him the cinematography, editing, and freelance skills needed to enter into the world of filmmaking.

From January 2023 to May 2024 Johnathan was the video fellow at the NPR/PBS affiliate station KERA in North Texas. Working alongside Kaysie Ellingson and the video team responsible for creative production, promotion, and live streaming. In 2025 the team won a Lonestar Emmy award for their series “Recovering the stories”, a multi part series that looks at Dallas and how it is shaped today by its rarely told history.

Currently Johnathan is a freelance photojournalist and is working on his first feature documentary project with his partner Azul Sordo and filmmaker Jake Hochendonner over the environmental efforts taking place in West Dallas and Joppa.
